Cutting Add comments

I realized that I haven’t shown any pictures up close of the cutting process.

Yes we are *still* cutting, but come lunchtime tomorow we will have cut 100% of panels, and hopefully get a gore or two sewn up before the weekends out.

Here is some of arrow “test” panels sewn up. Colours look great in real life, these pictures don’t do them justice:

One of the top arrow points, pretty big. Again shows the colours well.

A nice straight edge goes a long way.

Pins and clamps help a whole heap.

Another close up.

Clamps, pins and a straight edge, nothing can go wrong.. heh

LOTS of markings on EVERYTHING!!!

All these rolls you see in this picture are bits for the top arrows.
Normally this type of envelope would require 14 patterns, this one is taking up around.
Not only is that a whole lots more cutting, but a whole lot more sewing, but I think it’s worth the extra effort for the design.

Nice looking design!!! It looks 100% the same as the balloon I built a few years ago..

    I like your color choices..

    Thanks Keith!!

Those diagonal sews are a real pain hey? Especially when you have someone who wants them to line up *perfectly*.

Colours weren’t really choices, it was just what they had enough of, but I think it’s work out pretty good.

As I type nearly all the top arrow panels have been sewn.

looks great - glad you are making good progress

Thanks Ronald. The Lake is starting to look damn achievable!!!

Only 8 weeks but there is another long weekend in there that I will come back for, and dad can do heaps on his own when I am in Melbourne.

starting to take shape by the look of it mate. Time to get the old man on to the sewing.

Have you reserved a mark yet for the balloon? Have you looked at registering it yet? Will need to do this before an inspection can take place.

    keep up the good work.

Yopu should also see if there is someone about who is able to do the inspaection that is not CASA as they are slow and expensive.

Thats my job now I am back in Melbourne, organise all the paperwork and inspection/rego while dad is at home sewing.

The rego is a funny story, I really wanted VH-LOL but it was taken, then it came avaiable I noticed one week. I swear it was only on the list for 2-3 days before it disappeared. I have a list of ones I might use though.

I am going to join the SAA (I think thats it’s name) and try and find an inspector around Mildura.

Here is my basic timeline for all the paperwork stuff:
    - Reserve a mark so it can be sewn on by dad.
    - Join SAA and find someone close by.
    - Get a COA done by the SAA person.
    - Register the balloon with CASA under experimental rules.
    - FLY!
    Hows that looking so far?

I am going to try and get the SAA person to stipulate on the COA that after X hours (20-30 possibly) it can be flown over built up areas. If that is even possible.

  7. adam Says:

You need to have it formally registered, not just reserved, before the inspection can be done which is before all of the flying stuff.

SAAA is what you mean I am pretty sure.

You would need to get a specific mention of CAR (1998) 262AP(4) being overridden under 262AP(5). This does not have to be on the CofA.

  8. adam Says:

There is a bit of a tradition that experimental aircraft have an X at the start of the rego as a mark of honour.

    As such, what about XUP

Or POV (you are a povvo student after all)

    or WPT for waypoint?

    plenty of options :)

It does not have to, or it can not?

  10. adam Says:

does not. But can be :)

Angus and Adam I have decided that your next projects are to be a tetrahedron envelope.
Why because I want to fly one ;-)
It would also save you money and time in materials and sewing.
See I am always thinking about your best interests.

  12. Angus Says:

Haha sorry, maybe for the 3rd.

Second balloon has always been going to be a hopper, seeing as nearly everyone has one these days. Already got half the material :)
